It's not hard to see why outdoor solar lighting is all the rage. Of course it's great that you don't have to pay for electricity, but more important for most folks is the fact that you don't need to install any wiring. Take the light out of the box, put it beside your walkway or in your garden, and you're done. Because most solar lights have a built-in darkness sensor, you don't even need to think about turning them on and off.
Trouble shooting
If the lights worked fine in the beginning and getting shorter run time after few weeks or work when they want to, it is a good sign that the lights are still in good condition (in terms of quality) - the only setback is the solar panel's location needs to be changed.
Try a simple test to verify if you need to relocate the solar panel (or battery has premature failure):
Step 1: turn off the light, remove from current position;
Step 2: put the solar panel under full sun to charge for 4-5 days;
Step 3: check at night time to ensure the light is not turned on because you need to conserve battery power to check if battery can hold charges;
Step 4: turn the light on by 5th day, is the light working normal?
In most cases (from street light to garden spotlight), the lights are perfectly fine. The only culprit is where solar panel is located, it is not getting optimum sunlight to fully recharge lithium battery, therefore the short operating hours. As the sun is moving quite a fair bit in 2nd half of the year at Northern Hemisphere, the solar panel is getting less and less direct sunlight (most severe months are Oct-Jan) so it is advisable to move the solar panel according to the sun movement.
